Hello!
Here are some gems I found for you this week:
Austin Kleon explains why he always has a paper dictionary open next to his desk. I tried it this week, and found the perfect thumbnail for today’s issue :)
New music:
Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter - fair warning: this one’s been stuck in my head all week.
Speed of the Sound (of You) by Peter McPoland, who I’m realizing sounds a lot like Tallest Man on Earth. I also learned that the title is a reference to John Prine’s Speed of the Sound of Loneliness. Michael Cera’s cover of John Prine’s Clay Pigeons is currently making the rounds on TikTok, paired with cute animal couples people see in the wild.
Speaking of TikTok, Hozier’s Too Sweet is going viral, for good reason.
Im In Love by Jelani Aryeh, a criminally underrated artist!
Good Vibrations by Patrice - this song came out last year, but once I realized it was a Beach Boys cover my jaw dropped and I had to include it.
Saving the best for last: Orville Peck & Willie Nelson - Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other. It turns out that Nelson’s 2006 cover was the first gay-themed mainstream country song by a major artist. Here’s the story behind that release: “David Anderson, Mr. Nelson's friend and tour manager of three decades, told his boss he's gay…Singing "Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other" was Mr. Nelson's way of telling a longtime pal everything was OK, says Mr. Anderson”. We love Willie!
I love watching studio tours, so here’s a roundup from some of my favorite creators: Adam Savage, Evan Monsma, and Laura Kampf. Nine years after its release, Casey Neistat’s studio tour series still takes the cake. And I love Evan’s message: “you don’t have to be good at things or have a lot of money to make the life that you want, to be able to make cool stuff.”
A helpful reminder from Ryan Holiday: “the first draft of anything is shit.”
