Hey y’all! Happy friday :)
Fred again.. and Anderson .Paak ft. Chika in an energetic live performance at a house in Eagle Rock.
Really love this TikTok cover band, Wendlo. Here’s “You’re Still The One” by Shania Twain and “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney.
Speaking of The Beatles, a cast for the new biopic has supposedly been announced. It’s set to be directed by 1917’s Sam Mendes and each Beatle will get their own movie!
I’ve been toying with the idea of turning my smartphone into a dumb phone lately. I’m trying to read more books (and generally feel like crap after too much screen time), so this seems like a potential solution!
The podcast Most Innovative Companies (from Fast Company) explores how YouTube comedy channel/streamer Dropout (formerly College Humor) made a comeback. I’ve been loving the highlights from their show Very Important People.
Pop-Punk musician Yungblud starts his own music festival to fight back against increasingly unattainable concert ticket prices.
Song Exploder: a podcast not enough people are talking about! Host/Musician Hrishikesh Hirway sits down with songwriters and music producers to break down their song, layer by layer. The full song bookends each episode, but by the second time you hear it, it sounds completely new. I love their episode on Phoebe Bridgers’ Scott Street.
Serena Williams is narrating a documentary on the first ever Women’s World Cup, held in Mexico City in 1971. As an avid women’s soccer fan, I wondered why I’d never heard of this - and then learned that the footage had actually remained hidden for over fifty years! Here’s the trailer.
Yesterday’s Google doodle featured lesbian Chicana activist Jeanne Córdova, author of When We Were Outlaws. She’s known for founding The Lesbian Tide, which was “the first lesbian periodical in the US to reach a national audience and the first US magazine to use the word "lesbian" in the title”. I knew nothing about her before seeing the doodle and have enjoying researching more about her life. Happy Pride month!
I recently discovered a 1999 documentary about an average guy from Wisconsin trying to make a low-budget horror film. It’s called American Movie, and there’s a twitter account dedicated to posting every line of dialogue from the entire film.
One of my favorite rising YouTubers is Ali Gallop, who made a great video about why you shouldn’t be a travel filmmaker.
That’s it for this week! If you enjoyed these gems, consider sharing with a friend :)
See you next week!
Mia
