Gems of the Internet 012

Art on display at Clark Street Diner / Photography by Mia Zimonjic.
“The Gap” by Ira Glass, animated by Daniel Sax. Incredible typography combined with an important message for creatives who doubt themselves (so, all creatives). In a nutshell: quantity leads to quality.
As you may know by now, I’m a big fan of designers who share industrial design style product sketches, like Steven De Groot. These video tutorials by Sketch Everyday have been super helpful in demystifying this drawing style - and he’s a fantastic teacher! It’s such a different technique to focus on drawing by only moving your shoulder and elbow, not your wrist (that’s how they get such good lines and shapes - by focusing on the stability of the pencil).
I’m obsessed with Ryan Gajda’s fountain pen illustration videos. Here’s one of Bill Murray.
Music: Pogo makes electronic music edits from movie dialogue - Mrs. Doubtfire is my favorite one. “The Promise”, a cover by Samia and Jelani Aryeh (originally by When In Rome - very 80’s). “Misses” by Dominic Fike. Mitski’s haunting cover of “Bella Ciao”, the Italian folk song popularized by anti-fascists in World War II, and more recently, the Netflix show “Money Heist”.
I’m not a fan of egg yolk, but I enjoyed this edit of the best egg scenes in movies.
Really enjoyed this video from up-and-coming creator Simon Sanjur, “A Week in the Life of a Filmmaker” - his pacing, composition, sound design and color-grading all make for super engaging scenes throughout.
An NYT article about Laufey’s twin sister and creative director, who’s the brain behind all of her sister’s ethereal, romantic visuals. “Every single visual thing that you see is hers,” Laufey said. “Every photo shoot. Every outfit, she works with the stylist. Every music video. Every cover”. P.S. The YouTube channel Public Opinion made a great “48 Hours with Laufey” mini-documetary.
I found this GQ article on Ryan Holiday to be helpful - he stresses that practices, not schedules, are how he’s been able to maintain a consistent output of creative work for years. Focus on what needs to happen each day, not when.
Digital Illustrator Jess Hurd (@Brushnik) makes iPad drawings with amazing texture.
I’m so excited for The Olympics next week - here’s a fantastic photo of the racing block of the fastest woman in the world, Sha’Carri Richardson.
Hope you have a great weekend!
Mia
