Gems of the Internet Issue 019

Howdy partners. I’m back in the States after my trip to Montenegro for my sister’s wedding! There was a “Balkan Rally” at our hotel - tons of cool cars parked on the premises, including the vintage Land Cruiser above. It felt like a car museum!

Here’s some more photos from the trip:

Let’s jump into this week’s gems!

  1. I got invited to do a Q&A for an undergrad Communications class at USC! We talked about Patreon, new media, the value of cold-emailing, and what it’s like working as a researcher for YouTube creators. Lots of fun!

  1. Randomly came across this underrated YouTube creator, Joshua Bonzo. His music selection, storytelling, and color-grading really stood out to me (as someone who spends a lot of their work day on YouTube - that’s not easy!). Another up-and-coming YouTube creator, darendarendaren, with a great video about starting over in your 30’s. And Nneka Julia made a perfect short film about the difficulty of setting boundaries (relatable!).

  2. One of my favorite artists is sign-painter Koy Suntichotinun (@koysun). He does a lot of collabs with local businesses, and also makes great merch!

  3. Music: A cover of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle” by Silver Cup, “Diet Pepsi” by Addison Rae, a cover of “Volver, Volver” by William Beckmann at the Grand Ole Opry, “Problem Solver” and “Nosebleeds” by slimdan, “Bug Like an Angel” by Mitski, “Vas-y Le Chat (feat. SEVERINE MOULETIN) [Dub]” by The Emperor Machine, “Travel” by Meshell Ndegeocello, “Everybody Wants to Be Famous (Cedric Gervais Remix)” by Cedric Gervais Vs. Superorganism (who also has a great Tiny Desk).

  4. Laura Kampf and Van Neistat held a peer discussion on their Patreons, so I drew it.

  5. Dan Nigro shows his process behind the making of Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!”.

  6. Just finished reading Alex Banayan’s The Third Door: The Mindset of Success. He dropped out of USC to pursue his mission of interviewing the world’s most successful people about how they got to where they are. I had no idea who he was before his interview on “The Colin and Samir Show”, but quickly became a huge fan!

  7. This hilarious TikTok comedy series explores the creator’s Inner Child, along with her Inner French Person, Circus Performer, Knight, etc.

  8. Tarantino Saw It Coming” is one of Dodford’s best documentaries, and a solo work at that!!

    Thanks for reading.
