Hey! It’s been almost a year since my last issue (sorry!). Since then, I went to Sundance, got engaged, got laid off, started a new job, read some books, and of course, found some gems of the internet. I’d love to share them with you!
Music: Obviously, Bad Bunny at the Superbowl halftime show. “Baile Inolvidable” makes me tear up every time. Sidenote - Remember the taco guy who was featured in Bad Bunny’s performance, Villa’s Tacos? I just tried those for the first time this past weekend and they are hands-down the best tacos I’ve ever had. Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally (Harry Styles’ newest album) is great - I love “Pop” and “Ready, Steady, Go” but they’re honestly all so fun. I know nothing about music production but all I can say is listen with noise-cancelling headphones. “If You Know Me” by Hudson Freeman - Hudson’s indie folk song went viral on TikTok, with John Mayer even posting himself practicing the riff - an instant classic. “Scooby” by Corook (which feels like a Gen Z version of “That Funny Feeling” by Bo Burnham) and “Kleptomaniac” (the live version is so fun). New Arlo Parks album - LOVE!! One of my all-time favorite songs is “Pegasus” ft. Phoebe Bridgers but I have a feeling this album might have a song that beats it.
Film: Come See Me in the Good Light, a doc about the poet Andrea Gibson (who recently passed away from breast cancer), was just nominated for an Academy Award. It’s been on my list for a while but I’ve been saving it for when I have enough time to cry for two hours straight! Speaking of the Oscars, a short film very close to my heart was nominated - Jane Austen’s Period Drama!! My 8th grade singing teacher Julia Aks co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in this hilarious period piece about an 18th century wedding proposal gone terribly wrong. My best friend was the costume supervisor and has a short cameo as a housemaid (also a student of Julia’s), and ~ya girl~ is in the credits for helping with Title Design (that little title animation at the beginning lol). Give it a watch here!
Books: The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. I can’t wait for the inevitable TV mini-series adaptation! Storyworthy by Mathew Dicks (from The Moth storytelling podcast). Excited to read Austin Kleon’s newest book Don’t Call It Art! once it comes out in June!
YouTube: Rabbit Hole, created by Veritasium’s former science producer. Really enjoyed this mini-doc about Disney Imagineer/woodcarver Ray Kinman. The crux: talent is a myth - being a good artist is about putting in the reps.
TV: Currently obsessed with The Pitt, Broadchurch, and Neighbors (which feels like it could be on YouTube - in a good way).
P.S. I’ve embedded an ad from beehiiv’s built-in ad network! It keeps the newsletter free and if you click on it, I earn a small commission :)
