Hey! Hope you had a great week.
Music: Swedish rapper Yung Lean features in a new music video (very Dead Poets’ Society) with incredible choreography, shot on film. An interview with Taylor Swift as part of the NYT’s Popcast 30 Greatest Living American songwriters list. New Death Cab for Cutie, also shot on film (what year is it???). Sofia Isella’s haunting, funny new song reminds me of Fiona Apple.
Books: very excited to read the new Lin Manuel Miranda biography and Mason Currey’s newest book, “Making Art and Making a Living”. On my wishlist: Made by MSCHF, the coffee table book from the art collective behind gobstopper sneakers (that reveal colors as they wear down) and microscopic designer handbags, and Born Standing Up, (Steve Martin’s autobiography).
Podcasts: just listened to a Song Exploder episode on “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”. My favorite part of the show is the tracing of frustrations these musicians have with part of a song not feeling right, and then the a-ha moment of a random breakthrough. It’s also comforting to know that some of our greatest musicians were also torn up by self-doubt and writer’s block, and their early ideas weren’t always perfect either (“Everybody Wants to Go to War” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it). At the end of each episode you hear the song in its entirety and it’s always so gratifying. Looking forward to listening to “Why AI Can’t Make Art with Austin Kleon”.
If you like listening to white noise on youtube, consider using this video which donates AdSense proceeds to charity, led by John and Hank Green.
My friend Paul (and cohost of the Gems of the Internet podcast) launched his own Patreon! A paultreon, if you will.
As a longtime popcorn afficionado, I’m eager to try this movie theater popcorn recipe and report back.
I’m a little bit obsessed with graphic props, and really enjoyed this deep dive into the craft.
A short doc from the NYT Op Ed team. A giant version of those nostalgic computer room speakers. Corinne Bailey Rae reacts to a group of kids singing her song (if you’ve seen the little kid playing piano on NPR’s tiny desk, he’s from that same school 🥺).
There’s a new movie about the 99’ers coming out, a sapphic soccer movie produced by women’s soccer legend Kelley O’Hara, and a VICE Sports mini-doc on the 99’ers too!
Thanks for reading :)
