Hey everyone! I’m back after a bad cold and ready to bring you more music nuggets I’ve been collecting, like a squirrel stocking away its precious acorns. Enjoy!
Chappell Roan’s new album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess has been on repeat for me since it came out.
Speaking of Chappell Roan, she was a guest on Elton John’s ‘Rocket Hour’ podcast. In each episode, Sir Elton shares his current music obsessions with such enthusiasm that I forget he’s a superstar and not my local DJ. My only gripe is that it’s on Apple Music and not Spotify.
It’s the ten year anniversary of Lorde’s album Pure Heroine, which was one of the biggest albums of the year when I was 16 (making me feel extremely old). I vividly remember her hit single ‘Royals’ playing on the radio while driving with my mom. Lorde wrote about her feelings regarding the anniversary in her own newsletter (which you can sign up for here) and even included a transcript of a reflective conversation with her producer Joel.
TikTok comedy creator Brian Jordan Alvarez released ‘Sitting’, an earworm that went completely viral, making it to Spotify’s Lorem playlist and even getting coverage from TIME magazine and The Independent. Produced by Josh Mac, it has a similar origins to ‘It’s Corn’ by The Gregory Brothers, another viral song that originated from a silly TikTok clip. The song inspired some excellent covers, and Alvarez even released Sitting-themed merch.
It’s the six year anniversary of Stranger in the Alps, Phoebe Bridgers’ first album and my personal favorite. Here is an excellent twitter thread of Phoebe explaining the meaning behind some of her lyrics.
Dominic Fike released his new album Sunburn, which I think has something for everyone (including Weezer fans). It’s hard to pick a favorite, so I’ll say mine are ‘Ant Pile’, ‘Dancing In The Courthouse’, and ‘Mama’s Boy’ for now. ‘Mona Lisa’ was even featured on the Spiderman: Across The Spiderverse soundtrack.
boygenius announced the rest, a surprise EP with four new songs - my favorite is ‘Black Hole’. They also recently performed their song ‘Cool About It’ on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. That’s all for this week! Thanks for reading.
